Pregnancy & Postnatal Extended Osteopathy Consultations

Postnatal osteopathy

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic in Maidstone, we offer osteopathy consultations focused on supporting women experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms and physical changes during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

All of our osteopaths are trained in the assessment and management of pregnancy and postnatal musculoskeletal conditions as part of their osteopathic education. These extended pregnancy and postnatal appointments are offered by practitioners who have undertaken additional postgraduate professional training in pre and postnatal pelvic health assessment.

These appointments are intended to support musculoskeletal health, comfort, movement and physical function during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment will begin with a detailed discussion about your pregnancy and/or birth experience, medical history, current symptoms and any concerns or goals you may have regarding your recovery and wellbeing.

Your osteopath will then carry out a comprehensive osteopathic and pelvic health assessment, which may include:

  • A postural and mobility assessment to understand how your body has adapted to the physical changes of pregnancy and childbirth
  • Assessment of movement, strength and functional load through the bod
  • Abdominal assessment, including screening for abdominal wall separation (diastasis recti) where appropriate
  • Pelvic health screening, including discussion of any bladder, bowel or pelvic floor-related symptoms
  • External pelvic floor assessment where clinically appropriate
  • Internal pelvic floor examination where clinically appropriate (optional – see below)
  • Following your assessment, your osteopath will discuss their findings with you and provide hands-on osteopathic treatment where appropriate. You may also receive personalised advice, lifestyle recommendations, rehabilitation guidance and exercises to support your self-management and rehabilitation goals.

Internal Pelvic Floor Examination

Your osteopath may discuss internal pelvic floor examination techniques where clinically appropriate. Any pelvic floor examination is entirely optional and would only ever take place with clear clinical reasoning and your explicit informed consent.

You will always have the opportunity to ask questions and decide what feels appropriate and comfortable for you. You may decline or withdraw consent at any time.

Examination should not be painful. If you experience discomfort at any stage, the assessment can be paused or stopped immediately.

FAQ’s

Can I bring my newborn?

Little ones are always welcome. If you are able to arrange childcare for a short time, it may help you focus more fully on your appointment, but we understand that this is not always possible and we are happy to work around it. On the other hand having your little one at the appointment may give us insight into your feeding posture, the way your body moves with holding or transferring your baby and much more. The choice is yours.

What clothing should I wear?

We recommend comfortable, loose-fitting clothing such as cycling shorts, running shorts, leggings, a vest or a T-shirt. Comfortable clothing allows ease of movement and access for assessment where appropriate.

Is the pelvic floor examination painful?

Examination should not be painful. If anything feels uncomfortable, we can pause or discontinue the assessment at any time. The appointment is always guided by your comfort and consent.

Should I book a standard osteopathy appointment or a postnatal assessment?

If you are pregnant or recently postnatal and feel you may benefit from a longer consultation with additional pelvic health-informed assessment, this appointment may be more suitable for you.

Can I still book a standard osteopathy appointment during pregnancy?

Yes, absolutely. All of our osteopaths are trained to assess and manage pregnancy-related musculoskeletal concerns during pregnancy. This extended appointment is designed for patients who may benefit from additional assessment time and pelvic health-informed care.

Do I need to have had a vaginal birth to benefit from this appointment?

No. Postnatal osteopathic assessment and management may be appropriate following both C-section and vaginal deliveries.

How soon after birth can I attend?

You are welcome to attend whenever you feel physically comfortable to do so. Some women choose to attend 6 weeks after birth, while others seek support later in their postnatal recovery.

If you are unsure, please contact the clinic and we will be happy to discuss what may be most appropriate for your situation.

What if I’m not sure which appointment to book?

Please email the clinic and we will be happy to chat about which appointment type may be most appropriate for your needs and circumstances.

What if it’s been a few years since my pregnancy?

Many women seek support months or years after pregnancy if symptoms or concerns remain ongoing. Whether you are recently postnatal or several years beyond pregnancy, you are welcome to book an appointment.
