Dry cupping is a soft tissue technique used by some of our team that is increasingly used to complement modern manual therapy and osteopathic care. One of the most common questions patients ask before trying it is:

“Will cupping leave marks on my skin?”

In some cases, yes marks may occur and these marks are a normal response to treatment.

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, we understand that cupping marks can look unfamiliar or even concerning if you have not experienced the treatment before or understand why they occur. So this blog explains what they are and why they happen.

1. What Is Dry Cupping?

Dry cupping is a technique that uses specially designed cups placed on the skin to create a gentle suction effect to decompress.

This suction produces a lifting or decompressive force on the skin and underlying soft tissue layers, which is different from traditional massage techniques that apply pressure or compression into the tissues.

Within osteopathic care, cupping may be used alongside hands-on treatment and movement-based techniques where clinically appropriate. It is always chosen based on individual assessment, suitability, and with your consent and understanding.

Rather than being used in isolation, cupping is generally one part of a broader, tailored treatment approach aimed at supporting areas of muscular tension, stiffness, or reduced soft tissue mobility.

2. Why Does Dry Cupping Leave Marks?

The circular marks sometimes seen after cupping are caused by the suction created by the cups.

This suction creates a gentle lifting effect on the skin and the superficial layers of soft tissue. As this occurs, it temporarily changes the pressure within the small blood vessels (capillaries) close to the skin’s surface.

This can lead to a mild, short-term pooling of blood within these superficial tissues, which is why circular marks may appear. These may look red, pink, purple or darker in colour depending on the individual response.

In general, the longer the cups are left in place and the stronger the suction, the more noticeable the markings may be.

These marks are not usually painful and are not the same as bruising caused by direct trauma or impact.

It’s also important to note that the intensity of the marks does not reflect how effective the treatment has been.

Importantly, cupping marks are not caused by “toxins leaving the body”. Instead, they are a natural local response of the skin and superficial blood vessels to pressure change and sensory stimulation.

3. How Does Dry Cupping Work in the Body?

Dry cupping works through a combination of local tissue effects and sensory stimulation of the nervous system.

When a cup is applied, it creates a gentle lifting or decompressive force on the skin and underlying soft tissues. This produces a change in pressure within the superficial layers of the body.

One of the responses to this is a temporary change in local blood flow within the small capillaries close to the skin’s surface. This is what can contribute to the visible redness or marking sometimes seen after treatment.

Alongside these local effects, cupping also creates a strong sensory input to the nervous system. This may influence how the brain interprets signals from the treated area, particularly in relation to discomfort or muscle tension.

From a manual therapy perspective, cupping is sometimes used to help support:

Local soft tissue circulation responses

Sensory awareness of an area (proprioception)

Short-term changes in perceived stiffness or tightness

Relaxation of areas of muscular tension when used alongside other techniques

These effects are generally temporary and vary between individuals.

It is important to note that cupping is not presented as a treatment that “repairs” tissues directly, but rather as a supportive technique used within a broader osteopathic approach to musculoskeletal care.

4. What Do Cupping Marks Look Like?

The appearance of cupping marks can vary significantly between individuals.

Some people may notice very light markings, while others may see more visible circular patterns.

Factors that may influence this include:

Skin sensitivity

Strength and duration of suction

Hydration levels

Area being treated

Individual tissue response

5. Are Cupping Marks a Good Sign?

Cupping marks are simply one possible tissue response to the treatment and are not required for the therapy to be effective.

Some people develop visible marks, while others may not notice any change in the skin at all.

Both responses are completely normal.

6. How Long Do Cupping Marks Last?

In most cases, cupping marks begin to fade within a few days and usually resolve within one to two weeks.

The colour may gradually change as the skin settles and the tissues return to normal.

If you are ever unsure about post-treatment changes, your osteopath will always be happy to advise.

7. Does Dry Cupping Hurt?

Most people describe cupping as a pulling or tight sensation on the skin. It is generally well tolerated, although sensitivity can vary depending on the area being treated and individual comfort levels. The intensity of suction can always be adjusted during treatment. It should never be painful if applied correctly.

8. Safety and Suitability

Dry cupping is not appropriate for everyone, and suitability is always assessed before treatment.

Your osteopath will take a full case history and may adapt or avoid cupping depending on factors such as:

Skin health or sensitivity

Medical history

Medication use

Circulatory considerations

Pregnancy or other relevant health factors

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, patient comfort and safety are always the priority, and treatment is tailored to the individual.

Considering Dry Cupping in Bearsted or Maidstone?

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, dry cupping may be used as part of an individualised osteopathic treatment approach where clinically appropriate. Keira, our principal osteopath completed training with Rocktape and uses rock pods alongside traditional cups.

If you are curious about cupping or unsure whether it is appropriate for you, we are always happy to discuss this before booking.

Please contact the clinic to learn more or arrange an appointment.

Pregnancy brings significant changes to your body. As posture, weight distribution and hormones change throughout each trimester, many women experience aches, stiffness and discomfort, especially in the lower back, pelvis and hips.

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, we often support women throughout their motherhood journey, but most commonly see pregnant women seeking help for pregnancy-related musculoskeletal discomfort and postural strain.

Why Back Pain Is Common During Pregnancy

Pregnancy places additional physical demands on the body as it adapts to a growing baby.

Several changes may contribute to back pain and muscular discomfort during pregnancy, including:

Changes to your centre of gravity

Increased strain on the lower back and pelvis as your bump grows

Altered movement and weight-bearing patterns

Stretching of the abdominal muscles

Changes in joint mobility associated with pregnancy-related hormonal changes

As pregnancy progresses, everyday activities such as walking, sleeping, sitting, driving or turning in bed can sometimes become less comfortable.

Many women experience symptoms such as:

Lower back pain

Pubic pain

Pelvic discomfort

Hip pain

Mid-back or rib tension

Sciatic-type symptoms

Neck and shoulder tightness

These symptoms of course can vary considerably between individuals and stages of pregnancy.

What to Expect and Is It Safe?

Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession that focuses on the musculoskeletal system — including muscles, joints, posture and movement.

Osteopathy treatment during pregnancy is typically gentle, tailored to the individual and designed with patient comfort in mind.

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, appointments begin with a detailed discussion about symptoms, medical history and stage of pregnancy before treatment is considered.

As a clinic, we typically do not offer hands-on osteopathic treatment during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This cautious approach allows patients to progress beyond the early stages of pregnancy before treatment is considered.

Our osteopaths, Keira and Giusi, are trained to adapt treatment during pregnancy following their training at the European School of Osteopathy. Patient safety and comfort are always prioritised throughout care.

Osteopathic care during pregnancy may include:

Gentle hands-on treatment

Soft tissue techniques

Joint mobilisation

Movement and posture advice

Guidance around sleeping and positioning

Stretching and self-management advice

Treatment approaches may be adapted depending on:

Stage of pregnancy

Medical history

Symptoms

Mobility and comfort levels

Advice from the patient’s maternity care team where appropriate

Altered positioning and adaptations may also be used to help ensure patients feel comfortable during treatment whilst remaining effective. The aim is generally to help support comfort, mobility, relaxation and overall musculoskeletal function during pregnancy.

It is important to note that osteopathy is not a replacement for maternity or medical care. Patients should continue to follow advice from their GP, midwife or obstetric team throughout pregnancy. However, as with any healthcare approach, osteopathic treatment may not be suitable for everyone during pregnancy. If there are any concerns or medical complications identified during your case history, we may recommend discussing care with your GP, midwife or maternity team before treatment begins.

What Happens at a Pregnancy Osteopathy Appointment?

Your first appointment will usually include:

A detailed case history including discussion of symptoms and pregnancy stage

Assessment of posture and movement

Explanation of possible treatment approaches

Time to ask questions or discuss concerns

Treatment is adapted to suit the individual and patient comfort remains central throughout.

We understand that every pregnancy is different, and our approach is always tailored accordingly.

We offer ongoing aftercare and advice tailored to your individual needs, but to really maximise your recovery and results, it’s important to know what not to do after treatment.

Here’s our friendly guide to the most common post-treatment mistakes—and how to avoid them:

1. Avoid Overdoing It Too Soon

It’s lovely when patients leave the clinic feeling lighter, looser, and more energised—but this boost can be deceptive. That post-treatment “spring in your step” can tempt you back into your usual routine (or even overcompensating for lost time with an intense workout, heavy gardening, or a to-do list blitz).

But remember: your body needs a window of rest and recovery to process the changes. Doing too much, too soon can interfere with the positive effects of treatment. Gentle movement is encouraged—but hold off on anything high-impact or repetitive in the first couple of days. Think nourishing movement, not pushing through pain. Give your body the chance to absorb the benefits. Don’t undo all the good work we’ve achieved together.

2. Avoid Ignoring Unusual Symptoms

Some discomfort after treatment is completely normal—but if something doesn’t feel quite right, please reach out to us.

Don’t second-guess or wait it out. Whether it’s a reaction that feels too intense, a new symptom, or a concern about one of your exercises or ergonomic changes—we’re here to help. It’s far better to check in with us than to silently struggle. Sometimes, it’s a simple tweak to your routine; other times, it might be a sign of something that needs medical attention. Either way, open communication helps us keep you on the best path forward.

3. Avoid Skipping Your ‘Homework’

Yes, we give you homework—but it’s not a punishment! It’s a crucial part of your recovery and long-term progress.

Whether it’s tailored exercises, posture tweaks, or lifestyle advice, we’ve given you these tools for a reason. Missing a whole week between appointments without implementing our suggestions is a missed opportunity for progress. Try weaving them into your daily routine—they don’t have to take long, and over time, these little actions create big shifts.

4. Avoid Neglecting Nutrition

After treatment, your body is in healing mode. And healing takes fuel—the right kind.

It’s easy to reach for quick snacks, sugary drinks, or that evening glass of wine when you’re feeling tired. But processed foods, caffeine, excess sugar, and alcohol can slow recovery, promote inflammation, and dehydrate the body. Focus instead on whole, nourishing foods packed with vitamins, minerals, and hydration. Think of it as giving your body the tools it needs to do its job properly.

5. Avoid Skipping Follow-Up Appointments

Each session builds on the last. If we’ve recommended a course of treatment, it’s because your body needs time and consistency to reach its full potential.

Missing or postponing appointments disrupts your progress and can set you back. Especially if you fall into what’s known as the boom and bust cycle. This is where you feel good temporarily, do too much too soon, then crash and find yourself right back at square one (or worse). If life gets in the way, we get it, but do your best to stay committed to the plan.

Osteopathy is a journey, not a quick fix. By giving your body the time, space, and support it needs after treatment, you’re helping those positive changes take root and last.

As always, if you have questions or concerns after your session, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re here to help you feel your best. At the clinic & beyond.

If you’re exploring osteopathy, physiotherapy, or chiropractic care in Maidstone for pain relief, you may have come across different terminology for needle-related techniques such as dry needling. While different types of acupuncture involve the use of fine, sterile needles, they have key differences that are important to understand.

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, Keira offers dry needling as part of her osteopathy treatments. However, she does not practise traditional Chinese acupuncture. Understanding how these approaches differ can help you make an informed decision about your care. Keep reading to learn more about the background, principles, and goals of each method so you can decide which approach suits your needs best.

Origins & Philosophies

Chinese Acupuncture

Chinese acupuncture is a key part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a healthcare system developed over thousands of years. It is based on the concept of the body’s vital energy named Qi (pronounced “chee”) and its movement through pathways called meridian lines. Its thought in TCM that imbalances or blockages in Qi may contribute to discomfort or illness. Acupuncturists insert needles at specific meridian points to restore balance and support the body’s natural healing processes. Chinese Acupuncture is widely recognised and regulated in the UK, with professional standards set by organisations such as the British Acupuncture Council.

Dry Needling

Dry needling, by contrast, is grounded in Western medical principles and modern anatomical science. Rather than focusing on energy channels or meridians, it targets myofascial trigger points. Tight, sensitive bands within muscle tissue that can contribute to localised or referred pain and restricted movement. This technique is commonly used by healthcare professionals such as osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists. At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, we often integrate this technique into treatment plans to help reduce muscular tension, support pain relief, and improve mobility where clinically appropriate. The approach is typically combined with other hands-on osteopathic techniques

Key Differences

Underlying Principles: Chinese acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), focusing on energy flow and meridians, whereas dry needling is a modern technique based on anatomical and neurological principles.

Needle Placement: Acupuncture involves inserting needles at specific meridian points selected according to TCM diagnosis. Dry needling focuses on palpable trigger points within muscles that are contributing to pain or restricted movement.

Treatment Goals: Acupuncture is often used with a holistic focus on overall well-being, whereas dry needling aims specifically to relieve muscle tension and discomfort.

Assessment Style: Traditional acupuncture may include pulse and tongue diagnosis alongside a detailed lifestyle & medical review. Dry needling is typically performed following a musculoskeletal assessment, including posture, range of movement, orthopaedic testing and a past/present medical history.

Osteopathy isn’t just for adults with back pain or work-related injuries—it’s beneficial at any age, including for babies, children, and teenagers. Osteopathy is universal.

At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, we understand that growing bodies are constantly changing and adapting. Some osteopaths, like Keira, have undertaken undergraduate training in paediatrics during their degree, studying the growth and development of a baby from embryo through pregnancy and beyond birth. This in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, combined with hands-on experience in children’s osteopathy training clinics, allows osteopaths to refine gentle treatment techniques. Once qualified, they can tailor treatments to suit each child’s unique needs, no matter how small.

How We Treat Children

The approach we take at our clinic for treating children is always tailored to their medical history and stage of development. We work on the principle that the structure and function of the body are closely connected—when the body’s structure is out of balance, it can affect overall function.

Using gentle, hands-on techniques, we aim to release tension, improve mobility, and support healthy movement. Treatment may include cranial osteopathy techniques, gentle massage & stretching, or joint mobilisation. Following treatment, we provide personalised management advice to support your child’s ongoing well-being at home.

Newborns & Toddlers

From birth, a baby’s bones are softer and require a gentle, specialist approach. At our Osteopathic Clinic in Maidstone, we offer cranial osteopathy—a light, hands-on technique designed to support comfort, relaxation, and natural development.

By applying subtle pressure, we work to encourage balance within the body, promoting a sense of calm and ease in your baby’s tissues while supporting the structure-function relationship.

We are also trained to assess musculoskeletal health and screen for medical conditions across all ages, including newborns and toddlers. If we identify any signs that require further medical attention, we may be able to assist with a referral to a midwife or your GP for further investigation and care. Think of us as another set of eyes to help monitor your baby’s growth, comfort, and development.

School Years – Teenagers

As children grow into their teenage years, they often become more active, participating in sports and physical activities. With this increased movement, muscle and joint discomfort can become more common. Additionally, school-related factors such as heavy bags, unsupportive shoes, and prolonged studying postures can contribute to aches and pains.

Our osteopaths use gentle manual therapy techniques to support growing bodies. Treatment for this age group may include but is not limited to massage, joint articulation, cranial osteopathy, kinesiology taping, and visceral techniques, depending on the individual’s needs.

We also take a proactive approach, helping children and teenagers understand their bodies and develop healthy movement habits to prevent future episodes of pain or injuries.

What to Expect at a Child’s Osteopathy Appointment

No matter your child’s age, the initial osteopathy appointment follows the same structure. We begin by taking a detailed case history, including medical history, followed by an examination and treatment.

During this process, we discuss your child’s health history, including details about your pregnancy, birth, early development, and any relevant family medical history. While some information comes from parents, we strive to involve your child in the conversation when possible to ensure they feel engaged and comfortable. Their well-being is always our top priority.

Next, we perform a gentle examination, ensuring your child remains at ease throughout. We then discuss our findings with you and create a treatment and management plan that considers your child’s needs, medical history, and comfort level. This plan is always guided by your preferences as a parent and what is most appropriate for your child.

If you’re looking for a specialist children’s osteopath in Maidstone, contact Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic today to see how we can help support your child’s health and development.

Welcome to Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, your trusted osteopathic clinic in Maidstone. Whether you’re seeking relief from chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or looking to enhance your overall health and well-being, our experienced osteopaths are here to help. Knowing how to prepare for your first osteopathy appointment can ensure you get the most out of your visit. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get ready and know what to expect.

Understand What Osteopathy Is

Before your appointment, it’s beneficial to understand what osteopathy entails. Read our previous blog, “Discover the Benefits of Osteopathy at Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic,” to familiarise yourself with the techniques we may use during your appointment. This foundational knowledge will help you prepare, feel more comfortable and informed.

Gather Your Medical History

Your osteopath will need a comprehensive understanding of your medical history to provide the best care. Be sure to gather any relevant imaging reports, consultant letters, medical letters, or current prescription lists. Familiarise yourself with your past surgeries, injuries, or conditions. Having this information ready will allow your osteopath to tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

Prepare Your Questions

Prepare any questions you want to ask your osteopath. This ensures that you leave the appointment feeling informed and listened to. Whether it’s about the treatment process, expected outcomes, or any concerns you have, we are here to provide you with clear and helpful answers.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Osteopathic treatment often involves physical movement and manipulation of the body. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. You might also be asked to remove certain items of clothing for specific treatments, so consider bringing a pair of shorts and a comfortable top.

Discuss Your Previous Experiences

Be ready to discuss any previous experiences you’ve had with osteopaths, as well as any preferences you may have regarding treatment styles. Sharing this information helps your osteopath gain a clearer understanding of your history, expectations, and comfort levels, allowing them to tailor the session specifically to your individual needs.

It also gives us the opportunity to prepare appropriately for both your current and future appointments. For example, we can adapt the treatment room to make you feel more comfortable by adjusting the lighting, adding calming background noise, or ensuring the room is at a temperature that suits you. If required, we can also arrange a chaperone or provide additional assistance to ensure you feel fully supported and at ease throughout your visit.

The goal is to make your experience feel safe, respectful, and personalised. Letting us know your preferences in advance helps us prepare properly and ensure your appointment feels as comfortable as possible.

Relax and Enjoy the Process

Don’t worry—you are in safe hands. Our team of friendly and professional osteopaths are dedicated to ensuring you have a positive experience with us. Relax, and look forward to the benefits of osteopathy.

Did you know that over 1 in 5 adults worldwide suffer from chronic pain, impacting their daily lives? In the UK alone, approximately 28 million people contend with chronic pain, making it one of the most prevalent and debilitating health challenges.

Understanding Chronic Pain

Chronic pain persists for more than three months, extending beyond the typical healing period of an injury or illness. Unlike acute pain, which signals immediate harm, chronic pain can become a persistent and distressing part of daily life.

Examples of chronic primary pain conditions include migraines, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and complex regional pain syndrome. Additionally, chronic secondary pain may result from surgery, trauma, fractures, or nerve damage, affecting individuals in various ways.

The Impact of Chronic Pain

Physically, chronic pain limits mobility, weakens strength and disrupts daily activities. Emotionally, it induces frustration, anxiety, and depression. Socially, it strains relationships, reduces participation in social activities, and hampers work productivity. Managing chronic pain requires ongoing support from a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to address all of these impacts.

The Role of Osteopathy in Chronic Pain Management

Osteopaths assess the whole person, considering not only symptoms but also underlying causes and contributing factors of chronic pain. This holistic approach enables them to develop personalised treatment plans tailored to each patient’s specific needs and conditions. A variety of hands-on techniques address musculoskeletal imbalances and dysfunctions that contribute to the chronic pain presentation. Osteopaths also empower patients by educating them about their condition, self-management strategies, and preventive measures meanwhile suggesting lifestyle modifications, ergonomic adjustments, and personalised exercise programs.

Ultimately Osteopaths help patients take an active role in managing their chronic pain and improving their overall quality of life.

Benefits of Osteopathic Treatment

Regular osteopathic treatment, recommended monthly or as per your osteopath’s advice, offers several benefits for chronic pain management:

Pain Relief: Alleviate pain and discomfort effectively.

Improved Quality of Life: Enhance mobility, reduce stress, and promote better sleep patterns.

Empowerment and Education: Learn about your condition, pain triggers, and self-management strategies to actively participate in your recovery.

Osteopathy is a holistic system of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment applied to a wide range of medical conditions. At Bearsted Osteopathic Clinic, we understand that the body’s structure (bones, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues) and function (movement and operation) are interrelated and integral to overall health. When these elements work harmoniously, the body can regulate and heal itself naturally.
